The Marlengo/Marling irrigation channel path
The twelve-kilometre Waalweg in Marlengo/Marling is one of the longest Waale, or irrigation canals, in South Tyrol.
The Waal in Marlengo was built over the course of 19 years, between 1737 and 1756, at the request of Carthusian monks in Senales, who operated the Gojenhof farm as a winery in Marlengo.
For those who want to walk the entire distance of the Waal, the 3-to-4 hour hike starts at Tel/Töll and ends in Lana di Sopra/Oberlana, from where you can return to the starting point with a bus or other mode of transportation. For the less ambitious—and for those who love circular hikes—you can walk only the central leg of the Waal, using Marlengo as a starting and ending point.
The Route: Follow Trail No 32 from the centre of Marlengo (363 m) first through houses and turning northwest through orchards. You’ll find the beginning of the Waal after about 20 minutes: you can enter the trail near the Waldschenke tavern (475 m). The Waalweg trail runs alongside the Waal water channel: this level hike has beautiful views of Marlengo and the valley of Val d’Adige/Etschtal to the south.
